The United States was involved in a war with Mexico from 1846-1848.  Many of the soldiers involved in this war received pensions from the government later in life.

The pension files usually tell information about his service in the war, his life after the war, and details about his family. They are usually between 50-100 pages long. These are available for soldiers of most of the wars that were fought in the 1800s.
